Is Texas the Least Safe State in America? What WalletHub's 2026 Ranking Means for DFW Homebuyers

by Christina Money

The short answer

Not quite the least safe, but close. WalletHub's 2026 Safest States in America report ranked Texas 48th out of 50, ahead of only Louisiana and Mississippi. The catch: the ranking leans heavily on disaster losses, uninsured rates and road safety, not just crime. That's why Plano, McKinney and Frisco keep showing up on national safest-city lists in the same year Texas lands near the bottom.

If you're relocating to DFW, this headline has probably already landed in your group chat. So let's break down what the report measures and what it means if you're buying or selling in DFW.

Why did Texas rank 48th?

Texas scored worst on emergency preparedness, which WalletHub based on billion-dollar climate disasters from 1980 to 2024 and the losses they caused. WalletHub compared all 50 states across 52 metrics in five categories.

Texas finished 48th overall and 48th in emergency preparedness, its lowest score. It ranked 40th in three categories: personal and residential safety, financial safety and road safety. Its best showing was workplace safety, at 30th.

Texas also has the highest rate of uninsured residents in the country, which pulled down its financial safety score. Vermont ranked first overall, followed by Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Connecticut.

Look at those numbers again. The single worst category for Texas is weather. If you were here for the February 2021 freeze or have replaced a roof after a spring hailstorm, that ranking won't shock you.

How do Collin County cities rank?

City-level studies tell a very different story, because they focus on crime and traffic instead of statewide disaster and insurance data.

In July, SmartAsset looked at violent crime, property crime, traffic deaths and disaster risk across the 83 largest U.S. cities and ranked Plano the No. 2 safest in America. In October, Vivint ranked 93 cities on property crime and new-homeowner factors, putting McKinney at No. 2, Frisco at No. 4 and Plano at No. 11.

So Texas can rank 48th while three of our biggest suburbs rank near the top nationally. Both things are true. They're measuring different things.

One note from me: as a Realtor, I'm not allowed to tell you a neighborhood is "safe" or "unsafe." Fair housing rules keep agents out of that call, and you shouldn't take anyone's word for it anyway. Look at the data yourself. Every city here publishes crime data through its police department, and I'm happy to point you to it.

What this means if you're buying or selling in DFW

The part of this report that hits your wallet is the weather. In North Texas, "safety" shows up as your insurance premium, your deductible and the age of your roof.

If you're buying:

  • Get homeowners insurance quotes during your option period, not the week before closing.
  • Ask how old the roof is and whether there have been hail claims on the property.
  • Read the wind and hail deductible. In Texas it's often a percentage of the home's value, not a flat dollar amount.
  • Check the FEMA flood map, even if the house isn't near a creek you can see.

If you're selling:

  • A newer or impact-resistant roof is a selling point. Have the paperwork ready.
  • Out-of-state buyers read the same headlines. Answer the insurance question before they ask it.
  • Price for today's market. Buyers have more options and more leverage than they did in 2021, and a home with an aging roof will feel that first.

Not directly. What affects buyers is the cost of owning a home here, and insurance is a big part of that monthly payment. Get quotes early in the process.

The bottom line

Texas ranks 48th because of hail, hurricanes, freezes and insurance gaps, not because our suburbs are falling apart. If you're moving to DFW, plan for the real costs: the roof, the deductible and the premium. That's where the "safety" conversation turns into dollars.

I was born in Irving and have lived through plenty of Texas weather. If you want help reading a roof report or comparing insurance quotes on a home you're looking at, that's exactly the kind of thing I walk my clients through.
